Rolling prairies, acres of pastureland, and a few sand hills scattered here and there make up Hayes County’s landscape.Famous for its county fair,this 713-square-mile county was named in honor of President Rutherford B. Hayes. While it was established on February 19, 1877, it wasn’t until the second half of 1884 when Hayes County was organized officially. Like many of its neighbors in Southwest Nebraska, ranching played a huge part in the county’s early days – and it still does today. The county seat is the village of Hayes Center.

  • Hayes County is composed of the following towns: Hayes Center (the county seat), Hamlet, Palisade, and Marengo. Administration of the public schools in the area is overseen by Hayes Center Public Schools.
  • Hayes County was the setting of one of the most notable events of Nebraska’s frontier days. This is where Grand Duke Alexis of Russia once famously decided to go on a buffalo hunt. In October 1871, the Russian royal made arrangements with President Grant to hunt in the Nebraskan central plains. The Grand Duke was able to shoot eight buffalo in the hunt that took place in January 1872. In his party were General George Custer and Buffalo Bill, among many now-iconic figures.
