Born out of an agreement between the Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company and the Lincoln Land Company, McCook was once the railroad center between Denver, Colorado and Omaha, Nebraska. Like most railroad towns in the past, McCook became a boomtown as more and more people flocked to it to become part of the thriving community.

McCook became a commercial center composed of commercial and residential developments of the age. Soon, farms and ranches grew around McCook, spreading across the area. In 1980, Buffalo Jones kept the world’s largest bison herd just north of the town. This saved the bison from extinction. McCook, the county seat of Red Willow County, is now the regional center of this part of the state. It has excellent healthcare, outstanding schools, and is ripe with many real estate investment opportunities.

  • The Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Sutton House is a showcase of Wright’s architectural prowess. This is the only Wright house in all of Nebraska and is an ideal example of a Prairie Style home.
  • Go on the Chicken Dance Trail and get the chance to spot the iconic greater prairie chicken. These elusive birds take to the fields every spring to engage in elaborate courtship rituals and displays.
